We Are GT Bicycles
From our Southern California beginnings in 1972 to the present, we have remained faithful to our BMX and mountain bike heritage. GT combines performance and serious fun to ensure good times wherever our bikes are ridden. Because, after all, fun is serious business.
The BMX frames of the time simply weren’t sturdy enough. At least, not according to Gary Turner. So, in 1972, utilizing skills learned from welding drag racing automobiles, he built the first GT frame for his son to utilize on the BMX SoCal race circuit. The frame was a hit.
1974 – 1980
GT Bicycles was founded on a simple idea: to help riders push the boundaries of what’s possible on two wheels by designing the most dependable, creative frames in the industry. It was a vision that was quickly realized in the BMX community, with an instant cult following on the race circuit.
1981 – 1986
GT motorcycles became identified with toughness and winning, claiming more BMX race victories and prestige than any other bike brand of the time. GT success was not limited to the track, as riders such as Bob Morales, Dave Voelker, Josh White, Eddie Fiola, Martin Aparijo, and Dino Deluca developed and perfected techniques that advanced the sport on the ground and in the air. As freestyle grew, so did the motorcycles, including the legendary Pro Performer.
1987 – 1994
As BMX freestyle rose to widespread appeal, GT expanded into the emerging sport of mountain biking. Hans Rey, Juli Furtado, Nicolas Vouilloz, Rishi Grewal, and Gerhard Zadrobilek verified GT’s strategy by winning many world cups and national championships on bikes with the famous Triple Triangle®. This unconventional frame design became a signature for GT and was regarded as the industry’s most sophisticated frame design.
1995 – 1998
GT was a pioneer in the development of full-suspension mountain bikes, dedicated to creating the greatest bikes on the mountain. Frame designs such as the RTS and LTS are driving a new generation of technological innovation in the industry.
1999 – 2002
GT’s ultra-reliable and economical i-Drive® suspension received excellent reviews. The design proved to be groundbreaking. Period. GT maintained a strong presence both on and off the road, with pro teams like Saturn using GT road bikes and gravity racers ripping the GT LOBO DH.
2007 – 2011
GT went on to build the world’s first full carbon downhill bike, the Fury, as well as the world’s first carbon BMX race bike, the UB2. And, as before, the results followed. Brian Lopes became the 2007 4X World Champion. Burry Stander won the 2008 U23 XC World Championship. Mike Day won silver in the debut BMX race at the Olympics, while Jill Kitner got bronze. The following year, Marc Beaumont won the 2010 Val di Sole World Cup, becoming the first person to win a UCI World Cup on a complete carbon DH bike (the Fury).
2012 – 2013
Gee, Dan, and Rachel Atherton, the world’s fastest Gravity family, joined GT Factory Racing in 2012. Together with Marc Beaumont, Taylor Vernon, and Martin Maes, the squad won more than 50 World Cup podiums, three World Championships, and three World Cup overall crowns. GT worked together to create world-class products like as the reinvented Sanction and Fury models. In reality, the Fury would achieve great success off the track as well, with GT Wingman Kyle Strait winning his second Red Bull Rampage, the world’s largest freeride mountain bike event.
2014
The mold has been broken, and the Grade is born. GT becomes the world’s first brand to sell a complete carbon, disc brake-equipped bike intended particularly for the growing Gravel scene. The innovative Grade was laden with features geared toward adventure and comfort on tough terrain. The Triple Triangle’s narrow seat stays, which included flared drop bars and solid glass fibers, reflected its off-road character.
2016 – 2020
Popular among fans. Following the resurgence of the BMX freestyle lineup, we established a new GT Factory Racing squad dedicated to success and fun, both on and off the bike. The crew embraced the ambition to bring GT’s passion for the sport into every home across the world, and they were important in relaunching a new LTS line of full suspension mountain bikes. Martin Maes piloted the Force and subsequently the Fury to consecutive Enduro World Series and Downhill World Cup victories. A world-first for the industry and a watershed event for Maes.
GT Bicycles fosters a love of riding by honoring the brand’s roots in dirt and street culture. Since creating its first BMX bike in 1972, GT has stayed committed to sharing the stoke on two wheels that the company was established on, since, after all, you can’t have Good Times without ‘GT’!”
